The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is awarded to those candidates who as per the rules and regulations, has submitted a meaningful thesis on the basis of the research done independently and originally in any particular discipline or involving more than one discipline (inter-disciplinary), that makes a fruitful contribution towards the advancement of knowledge, which is approved by the Board of Examiners as required.
Eligibility for Admission to Ph.D. for full time scholars in Science Education in India
Those candidates who have successfully completed a Master’s program in a Science with not less than a second class or as equivalent grade and in the case of examination where the classification does not exist, a minimum of 50% of marks in the qualifying examination in any Science of stream in which the candidate wants to pursue a PhD in Science. However, a minimum of 55% marks (60% marks for professional degrees) in the qualifying examination is a must to become an Assistant Professor at the University/ College level. Their degrees necessarily have to be awarded by any University approved by UGC.
For Part-time Research Scholars, they have to pursue the right research in their place of employment and/or in this University and such candidates shall necessarily spend at least one full semester under the abled guidance of the research supervisors within the minimum period as applicable from the date of registration in Ph.D. Admission in Science Education in India. The concerned research supervisor should award a certificate to the effect that the candidate has worked at least for six months in the whole of his/her research period with him/her. There shall also be a co-guide or research coordinator from the Institution where he/she is being employed. The Head of the concerned department of the concerned Indian university shall be the coordinator for conducting the doctoral committee meetings and other examinations.
Converting of full time registration into part time and vice versa
Not with standing instructions regarding the regulations, the concerned Indian University may permit the easy conversion from full-time research to part-time research and vice-versa in respect of the candidates registered, for some valid reasons and subject to satisfying all the necessary regulations, rules and conditions that are enforced. The period put in by the candidate will be worked out in the ratio of 2:3 for the research put in before and after such conversion.
Those scholars who could not complete their Ph.D. within the maximum time limit will be given a chance to re-register for Ph.D. provided and they would continue on the same topic under the same Research Supervisor for a fairly long while. They must apply for re-registration prior to the expiry of the prescribed maximum period with necessary fees. The re-registration scholars are permitted to submit their thesis after one year but not later than two years after the process of re- registration is conducted. They will certainly continue to be governed under the same regulations under which they have been previously registered.
General Procedure to register for PhD in Science Courses in India
The concerned University shall notify well in advance in the University website with regard to the number of seats available for Ph.D. program in different Science disciplines and the candidates shall then be admitted depending on the various vacancies once in 6 months usually which may vary from university to university.
Those candidates irrespective of their employment status opting for admission to Ph.D. courses in India full-time and part-time shall obtain the prescribed application form the University and submit the same to the Dean / Director of the School concerned or to the Head of the Department of the discipline concerned for further processing.
